Forklift Train the Trainer Course - on-site OSHA safety training

Forklift Train the Trainer Course

A forklift train the trainer course qualifies your own people to train and evaluate forklift operators under OSHA 29 CFR 1910.178(l). 3P Safety teaches it at your facility, on your trucks, and your trainers leave with the exams, evaluation forms and records to run your operator program in-house.

OSHA puts operator certification on the employer, and it lets the employer use its own trainers as long as they have the knowledge, training, and experience the standard calls for. This course gives your candidates the training, tests their knowledge and hands-on skill on your equipment, and documents both, so your program rests on a record instead of a promise. It is priced per class, not per seat: one price covers the crew you put in the room.

What does OSHA require of a forklift trainer?

One sentence covers it. Under 29 CFR 1910.178(l)(2)(iii), all operator training and evaluation must be conducted by persons who have the knowledge, training, and experience to train powered industrial truck operators and evaluate their competence. OSHA does not license, approve or certify forklift trainers, and nothing in the rule requires an outside company. An employee who meets that bar can train and evaluate your operators.

The rest of paragraph (l) is the job that trainer takes on:

Construction sites follow the same rule: 29 CFR 1926.602(d) says the powered industrial truck operator training requirements for construction work are identical to those in 1910.178(l).

Who should become your forklift trainer?

Pick people who already run the trucks well and whom operators listen to: lead operators, shift supervisors, warehouse or maintenance leads, and safety staff who drive. The course supplies the training and the documentation. The experience part of OSHA’s test has to come from the candidate, so send people with real seat time on the truck types they will teach.

What your trainers learn to do

What do your trainers leave with?

A trainer kit built on 3P Safety’s own course material, ready for every operator class they run after we leave:

Each trainer who completes the program receives a 3P Safety Train-the-Trainer certificate, valid for three years. It can list the trucks they trained on.

How the on-site class runs

  1. Scoping call. Truck types and attachments, how many trainer candidates, which shifts, your site rules, and preferred dates.
  2. What you provide. A classroom with a screen, the trucks your trainers will teach on with their operator’s manuals, a clear area for hands-on work, and the PPE your site requires.
  3. Classroom. The standard, the operator course content, and how to teach it.
  4. Hands-on. Pre-use inspection, operation, and evaluation technique on your trucks.
  5. Candidate exam and practical evaluation. Each candidate takes the exam and is evaluated on your equipment before we document them as a trainer.

How long does forklift train the trainer take?

Length is tailored to each job. It depends on how many candidates you send, how many truck types they will teach on, and how much hands-on time your floor allows. We scope it on a short call and schedule it around your production.

What does forklift train the trainer cost?

Priced per class (or per day), not per seat: one price covers the crew you put in the room, and travel is built into the quote. What moves it: the number of trainer candidates, the truck types in scope, and the days on site. Request a group quote or call (252) 274-0583.

Train the trainer, or operator training?

Train the trainer fits employers that hire often, run several shifts or sites, or need refresher training soon after an incident instead of weeks later. With a handful of operators and low turnover, our on-site forklift operator training may be simpler: we train and evaluate your operators ourselves and leave the records your certification needs. You can also combine them, with operator training now and a trainer class so the program stays in-house. If your crews also run boom or scissor lifts, see aerial lift train the trainer.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can an employee train and evaluate forklift operators?

Yes. 29 CFR 1910.178(l)(2)(iii) requires that training and evaluation be conducted by persons with the knowledge, training, and experience to train operators and evaluate their competence. It does not require an outside trainer, so a qualified employee can do both.

Is there an OSHA forklift trainer certification?

No. OSHA does not license, approve or certify forklift trainers or training companies. The question an inspector can ask is whether the person who trained and evaluated your operators had the knowledge, training, and experience to do it. A documented train the trainer course is how you show the training part.

Who certifies the operators, 3P Safety or our company?

Your company. Under 29 CFR 1910.178(l)(6) the employer certifies that each operator has been trained and evaluated, and the certification names the operator, the training date, the evaluation date, and the person(s) who trained or evaluated. After this course, that person can be your own trainer.

Does a forklift trainer qualification expire?

OSHA sets no expiration date for forklift trainers. The 3P Safety Train-the-Trainer certificate is valid for three years, the same interval OSHA sets for re-evaluating each operator’s performance.

Does this cover construction sites?

Yes. 29 CFR 1926.602(d) says the powered industrial truck operator training requirements for construction work are identical to 1910.178(l), so the same trainer program works on a jobsite.

Can online training replace an in-house trainer?

Online modules can deliver formal instruction. Practical training and the evaluation of each operator’s performance in the workplace, both required by 1910.178(l)(2)(ii), still need a qualified person on site, which is the job this course prepares your trainers for.

What do we need to provide for the class?

A classroom with a screen, the trucks your trainers will teach on with their operator’s manuals, a clear area for hands-on work, and the PPE your site requires. Tell us the truck types and the number of candidates when you book.

How many trainers can you qualify in one class?

Up to 10 trainer candidates per class. The class is priced per class (or per day), not per seat, so one price covers the group.
